Key Move-in Dates and Details to Keep in Mind
Pilots Prevent
June 1, 2021
With summer upon us, we’re already looking forward to the upcoming academic year and welcoming our students back to campus this fall. We’re currently working on solidifying our plans to ensure the move-in process goes smoothly and safely for our entire UP community.
This year, unlike years past, sophomore students will be able to move in before the first-years arrive. It’s our way of giving this class of students, who missed out of the first-year move-in day last year due to COVID-19, a chance experience having UP to themselves for a couple days and acclimate to their new life on campus with orientation and special activities specifically designed just for them.
Sophomore move-in day is August 17 and sophomore Orientation begins August 18. First-years will be able to move in August 19-20, and participate in their own Orientation activities August 21-22, while juniors and seniors move in. Fall semester begins August 23 and fall break arrives October 11-15. The full academic calendar is available in The Bulletin.
The move-in process is by appointment. Students will receive an email from Residence Life on or around June 18, with instructions on how to sign up for a day and time to move in, as well as any guidelines to keep in mind.
Although parents are allowed to help their students move in, we anticipate having to adhere to restrictions on group sizes. That means we will have to forgo the large Orientation gatherings we used to have, which typically included parents. At this time, all of our Orientation activities are currently planned for small academic groups and residence hall gatherings. However, the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations will be hosting some virtual events this summer and offering a variety of resources to help parents prepare for their student’s arrival.
The health and well-being of our student population is our biggest priority. Since we will not have the capacity to verify the vaccinations of parents and family members who visit campus during move-in days and Orientation, we will adhere to guidance regarding public gatherings from the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC), the Oregon Health Authority, and the Governor’s Office. Of course, we will be monitoring all developments. If the risk level in Multnomah County decreases, we will respond accordingly.
