University of Portland alum Sara Wyffels ’06 was named 2021 Arizona Teacher of the Year by the Arizona Educational Foundation during a virtual award ceremony. Wyffels, who has been teaching for 14 years, currently teaches Spanish Level 2 and International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement levels 5 and 6 at Chandler High School. Wyffels received her Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Portland’s School of Education in 2006.
As Arizona Teacher of the Year, Wyffels becomes a candidate for National Teacher of the Year and will engage in a “year of recognition” as an ambassador for the teaching profession. Wyffels will have the opportunity – COVID-19 permitting – to meet the U.S. President at the White House and spend a week at the International Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Wyffels was selected from the five 2021 Ambassadors for Excellence that were identified last month as finalists. The award was announced during the Arizona Educational Foundation's virtual awards ceremony on Friday, October 23.
