University of Portland to host “MLK Day On – Day of Service” and Keynote on January 20

The University of Portland will host “MLK Day On – Day of Service” at Portland-area agencies from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.; and a keynote address by Walidah Imarisha from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 20. Although classes are cancelled and offices will be closed in observance of the national holiday, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by taking a “day on,” for community service and not a day off.

The Day of Service is a service and leadership Initiative which allows participants to serve their community and while honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and his lasting influence on civil rights and freedom in this country. The service day is free and open to the UP community, students, and staff, and was organized under by the Department of International Education, Diversity and Inclusion. Transportation and lunch will be provided at no additional cost. This event requires an RSVP through UP Engage.

After the MLK Day On – Day of Service, Walidah Imarisha will deliver a keynote entitled, “What Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon?” at 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Imarisha, a local writer, activist, educator, and spoken word artist, will discuss Black history in Oregon and address issues of race, identity, power, and diversity in this state and nation. UP alumna Julianne Johnson ’83 will also offer a musical performance at this event. Johnson is a Grammy nominated recording artist, songwriter, entertainer and music and theatre instructor. This event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP and tickets are required.
