Engineering
April 15, 2019
University of Portland president, Fr. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C. has announced that Matthew R. Kuhn, Brother Godfrey Vassallo, C.S.C. Professor of Civil Engineering, will serve as interim dean of the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering beginning June 30 until a permanent successor is named. Kuhn has requested that he not be a candidate for the permanent position.
A gifted teacher and scholar, Kuhn is widely known for his expertise in geotechnical engineering. He has been a professor at UP since 1987 and holds a Ph.D. and an M.E. from the University of California, Berkeley; an M.E. from Tulane University; and a B.S. from the University of Missouri.
Kuhn will lead the Shiley School of Engineering on an interim basis following the departure of current dean Sharon A. Jones, who has accepted the position of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at University of Washington Bothell.
