‘Pippin’

April 10-14, 7:30 p.m. and April 14, 2 p.m.

A theatrical ensemble arrives, having found someone to play Pippin in “Pippin, His Life and Times.” Young Prince Pippin longs to find passion and adventure in his life. Along the way he discovers the true meaning of magic, happiness, glory, love and war in this iconic and unforgettable musical comedy.

Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.

University Singers & Wind Symphony concert

Saturday, April 13, 2 p.m.

The University Singers, under the direction of David De Lyser and associate conductor Natalie Werner ’19 present Voices to Heaven. Highlights of the program include Let My Love Be Heard by Jake Runestad,Cloths of Heaven by Z. Randall Stroope, and Evening Prayer by Ola Gjeilo, featuring Don Norton on tenor saxophone.

The Wind Symphony, conducted by Patrick Murphy and conducting associate Bianca Salazar ’20, will perform Omar Thomas’ stunning Of Our New Day Begun, composed to honor the nine victims of the 2015 Emanuel A.M.E. Church shooting in Charleston, SC. In addition, Peary Webster will conduct the Western premiere of Aaron Perrine’s Forever Radiant for chamber ensemble.

The concert is free and will be held in Buckley Center Auditorium.

University of Portland Jazz Festival

April 17-18

The 55th annual University of Portland Jazz Festival will be held on April 17-18, 2019 at the Chiles Center. This event will feature performances by high school and middle school jazz bands from throughout the region, who will also receive clinics from area jazz musicians and educators.

This year’s guest artist will be legendary saxophonist Charles McPherson. Mr. McPherson will be presenting concerts with the UP Jazz Ensemble on Wednesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. and Thursday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m. He will also give master classes on Wednesday, April 17 at 12:30 p.m. and on Thursday, April 18 at 10:15a.m. McPherson will be joining the UP Jazz Festival after recent performances at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.

All events will be held in the Chiles Center and are free and open to the public.

UP Orchestra concert

Tuesday, April 23, 7:30 p.m.

Come enjoy a musical romp through seven operas, with exciting overtures, including music from Bizet's Carmen, and arias featuring UP competition winners Natalie Werner ’19, and Alissa Henderson ’19. The concert, free and open to the public, will be held in Buckley Center Auditorium.

Treble Night! Choir Festival

Wednesday, April 24, 7:30 p.m.

UP’s Bel Canto, under the direction of Kathryn Briggs, will be joined by other treble choirs from Clark College, George Fox University, and the women of University Singers as they celebrate the beauty of the treble voice. Bel Canto’s set includes the Shaker song Come Pretty Love, Stephen Hatfield’s Ecuadorian panpipe inspired La Lluvia, and a journey into world beats with Ethan Sperry’s arrangement of the Sanskrit Prayer Jai Bhavani. After each choir performs their own set, they will join together in a fabulous finale to sing René Clausen’s lush Barter and the joyfully energetic Appalachian hymn Will The Circle Be Unbroken. The concert, free and open to the public, will be held in Buckley Center Auditorium. 

New Play Festival

April 24-25

This year’s edition of the popular New Play Festival features three short pieces set in different cars parked around the campus. In lieu of the usual call for submissions, this event will feature specific writers were invited to contribute to a themed event. Tickets are free, but seating is limited. Reserve your spot.
