Shiley School of Engineering professor Andrew Nuxoll named Fulbright Specialist

photo of Andrew NuxollShiley School of Engineering computer science professor Andrew Nuxoll has been named a Fulbright Specialist by the Fulbright Specialist Program at World Learning. Nuxoll will take part in a faculty exchange to Thailand for three weeks this July and will teach at Khon Kaen University. During his exchange, Nuxoll will be researching, teaching a workshop, and giving lectures on ethical issues in software and artificial episodic memory.

“Professionally, my main goal is to learn about how computer science is taught in Thailand,” Nuxoll said. “In terms of personal development, I'm looking to learn about the Thai culture.”

A University of Portland faculty member since 2007, Nuxoll was recently involved as an Opus Prize ambassador. He traveled to Chennai, India with two students to meet with Opus Prize finalists Daniel and Avitha Victor of the Agape Rehabilitation Centre. He is thankful to the University for giving him so many opportunities to teach and travel abroad.

“The Opus Prize trip was particularly inspiring because it renewed my commitment to teaching and making a difference,” Nuxoll said.  “I'm now especially grateful to the Fulbright Program for funding this particular trip to Thailand.”

The Fulbright Specialist Program sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at academic institutions abroad.
