Writing Style Guide - Athletics

Team Names

Team names/sports are not capitalized:

men’s basketball team
women’s soccer team
cross country team

Mascot

UP's mascot is Wally Pilot (not Wally the Pilot).

Nickname

the Pilots
Pilot women’s volleyball (note the singular usage)
Pilot men’s track (note the singular usage)

Avoid using “Lady Pilots” when referring to women's teams. If it is necessary to use the gender of a team, use men's and women's (not girl's). 

Sports

University of Portland sponsors 16 NCAA Division 1 teams: men's and women's basketball, cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, and tennis; men's baseball; and women's rowing, volleyball, and beach volleyball.
