Interpersonal Violence Prevention
The University of Portland Wellness Center is dedicated to working to build a campus culture that prevents violence in our community. We acknowledge and uplift the voices of survivors, and incorporate trauma-informed practices in our prevention. To do this, we:
- Prevent Violence before it happens in the first place:
- Check out @wellnesscenterup on Instagram for up-to-date information on events and IVP programming.
- Get involved with clubs like Students Against Sexual Assault.
- Email wellness@up.edu to get more information on volunteering and internship opportunities.
- Intervene in situations where someone may be harmed:
- Take a Green Dot Bystander Intervention training: This training teaches the basics of how to step in in a situation that may lead to interpersonal violence. To sign up, reach out to wellness@up.edu.
- Provide comprehensive support to survivors:
- Confidential Advocates support survivors of violence and their support systems through trauma-informed care and understanding of available options and resources. Meetings with advocates are confidential and legally privileged to ensure that survivors can proceed in a manner that is guided by their personal needs and decisions. They help survivors to find safety and comfort through academic support, safety planning, locating of health and wellness resources, support with investigations/decisions to investigate, and so much more.
- Title IX works to create an environment where all members of the UP community can learn and live without experiencing violence or harassment. Survivors or folks supporting a survivor can submit a report on the website, meet with the Title IX coordinator to discuss options and resources, and then students can decide how they proceed.
