Crisis Appointments

Crisis appointments are available for students experiencing an urgent need for timely mental health support. Crises are self-identified by the student (If you say you are in crisis, we believe you.) Topics may include family or relationship crisis, experience of violence, discrimination, suicidality, self-harm, etc. A counselor will work with you to ensure personal safety and develop an actionable safety plan with referrals to other urgent support as needed.

If you urgently need to speak with a counselor, UP students may call the Pilot Helpline 24/7 from anywhere: 503.943.7134, and choose option 3.

Students New to Counseling at HCC

If you haven’t seen any of our current counselors, you can choose between Consult or Intake appointments depending on your preferred outcome.

Schedule a Consult for a brief meeting with a counselor to discuss a single issue or explore topics such as:

  • Counseling options
  • Referrals to specialists for psychiatry, psychological testing, accommodations, etc.
  • Consider if therapy is right for you

Schedule an Intake for a longer meeting with a counselor to initiate counseling. Topics could include:

  • Discussion of what's bringing you to Counseling and therapy goals
  • Introduction to Counseling Services and clinician options
  • All Intakes are reviewed and matched with an appropriate clinician. Client/student preference/requests are considered.

Individual Sessions (Ongoing Counseling)Individual therapy sessions are private one-on-one meetings where a therapist helps a client explore thoughts, emotions, and challenges to support mental well-being.

Returning/Continuing Students

If you are a continuing or returning student, you can schedule Therapy with your previous clinician (no Consult or Intake needed).

  • First session will include update and discussion of current concerns and therapy goals.
  • If you want to change clinicians, which is fine, you can schedule a Therapy session with the new clinician. The first session will include an introduction, brief history, and discussion of current concerns and goals.
  • If you do not know who you want to see, you can schedule a Consult with any clinician to discuss options.
  • You're also welcome to schedule a Consult for a brief meeting with a counselor to discuss a single issue or check in.

Change or Cancel an Appointment

Call the Counseling Center at 503.943.7134 or email us at hcc@up.edu to change or cancel an appointment. When you leave a voicemail, please provide your name and call back number.

Some appointments may be canceled through the secure patient portal. To see if your appointment can be canceled online log in to the portal and go to "Appointments."

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we appreciate at least 24 hours notice before your scheduled appointment time. This notice is important because it may allow another student to utilize the appointment time.

Cancellation & No-Show Policy

We recognize that things happen and appointments sometimes need to be cancelled or rescheduled; however, your appointments are reserved specifically for you and if you don't cancel or show up, that time cannot be offered to someone else.

Therefore, we ask that you cancel or reschedule as early as you are able; at least 24 hours' notice is preferred in the interest of maintaining appointment availability for all students.

To cancel and/or schedule an appointment, please log into the secure patient portal or call the Health & Counseling Center at 503-943-7134 to notify the receptionist.

If you need to cancel within 24 hours or miss an appointment without prior notification (no-show), please call or email (hcc@up.edu) to reschedule and/or confirm your next scheduled appointment as soon as possible.
