Confidential Advocacy and Survivor Support
We provide a confidential space where you can speak to someone if you, or someone you care about, has experienced gendered or sexual harassment or interpersonal violence. We have been trained to provide trauma-informed support and we are not required to report to Title IX.
We can help you strategize next steps and advocate for resources as they relate to:
- What you need to feel safe, especially on campus.
- Support and flexibility that can help you to maintain success in your classes.
- Campus or community resources you need for personal health and wellness.
- Whether to report to Title IX.
- Whether to request an investigation or informal resolution process.
- Where to go to collect evidence.
- Whether to file a police report.
What you say to us has legal privilege, so we are not required to share what you tell us in the case of most legal subpoenas. However, there may be legal exceptions to confidentiality and privilege off campus, such as in cases of abuse of a minor, the elderly, or a person who is disabled. If you are concerned about these exceptions, please ask us during the appointment.
Every member of our team has been trained and Certified through the Oregon Sexual Assault Task Force 40 hour Campus Confidential Advocacy training, and receives ongoing support and training as needed to meet the needs of UP students and comply with Oregon Confidential Advocacy requirements.
If you schedule a meeting with a Confidential Advocate or Confidential Advocate Peer Associate, please read this. It has information about what you can expect.
Our Team
I'm Ben Tribelhorn, a culinary enthusiast with a passion for creating mouthwatering masterpieces in the kitchen. When I'm not whipping up delicious dishes, you can find me exploring the depths of the ocean as a scuba diving aficionado. Two adorable furballs, my feline companions, add a touch of charm and chaos to my life. Beyond the kitchen and underwater adventures, I embrace and celebrate my identity as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. I am also a professor in the Shiley School of Engineering.
Life's a journey, and mine is filled with flavors, underwater wonders, and the purrfect company of my two fabulous cats.
I’m Katelyn Galea (she/her), I’m a junior at UP majoring in Psychology and minoring in Sociology, and I'm a Confidential Advocate Peer Associate. I’m also a member of Psi Chi, work for Alumni and Family Engagement, and played for the women’s club lacrosse team for my first two years here.
Being from the Bay Area, I grew up attending San Jose Sharks games and have become a proud hockey enthusiast. During hockey season, you’ll find me on the couch watching games at least three nights a week. When I find myself having some free time, I like to explore Portland by trying new coffee shops, attending writing/poetry nights, or getting ice cream with friends. I’m always looking for recommendations on new activities or food spots to try!
I’m Brandy Daniels. Here at UP I’m an Associate Professor, teaching classes in Theology & Religious Studies and in Gender, Women’s, & Sexuality Studies—I’m especially interested in exploring what theology can learn from and how it can be more inclusive for women and the LGBTQ community. When I’m not at UP, I’m likely reading on my back porch, going on hikes or trips to the coast, and/or hanging with my wife and our tiny pup Karly Barx.
I’m Matthew Cordova (He/Him). I’m a Senior at UP majoring in Human Biology, and I'm a Confidential Advocate Peer Associate. I’m also a research assistant for the Sleep Health & Chronobiology Lab at OHSU and run for the Men’s Cross Country and Track team.
Coming from San Diego and originally being from Campbell, California, I love spending time in the ocean or simply spending time in the sunshine. When I find myself having some free time, I love to try new restaurants, go backpacking, or travel to new places in the PNW and beyond!
I’m Montana Hisel-Cochran. Named after a state my parents never visited, I was born and raised in New Mexico, went to college in Colorado, and spent the first half of my career in the Panhandle of Texas. A first-generation college student, I rode on my first plane as a sophomore in college to attend a speech tournament in Arizona. I enjoy live music, all types of Broadway shows, and listening to podcasts, especially about cults! If it were still a thing, I’d be a travel agent, as planning trips for myself or others is one of my favorite hobbies. Instead, I teach in the Pamplin School of Business.
I'm Kristine (she/her). I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I'm a Junior Nursing Transfer Student with an Associate's in Science Pre-Nursing from Monterey Peninsula College. I am currently a Reservist in the United States Navy and spend most of my time being mom to my 10-year-old daughter and 2-year-old Great Pyrenees/German Shepherd puppy (all dogs are puppies - amiright?). I enjoy reading sci-fi/fantasy books, baking sweet treats, and spending quality time with my little family. I am passionate about advocacy in and out of the healthcare field and I am excited to be part of the UP Community!
I’m Claire Costin, and I’m an unashamed dog enthusiast. My two golden retrievers are the light of my life and my constant adventure buddies. We can usually be found exploring Portland’s food scene, going for long run-walks, or hanging out on my couch watching TV and snuggling. If I can’t bring my dogs, I’m probably not going.
I’m also an aspiring knitter, amateur chef, and casual musician. As a professor in the Pamplin School of Business, I’m passionate about researching social justice issues and inclusive teaching. The best part of my job is working with students from diverse backgrounds, and when students send me pictures of their dogs.
I’m Kayla Garchar and I was born and raised in Colorado (and yet I’ve never set foot on a pair of skis!). I’m a proud 2019 UP alumna and returned to the Bluff in 2023 as a Campus Minister and Pastoral Resident of Mehling Hall. I love hiking, photography, and PDX food adventures. My background is in pastoral theology and my greatest joy is accompanying students on their journey of self-discovery.
I’m Erin Currie, the Advocacy Service Coordinator of the Confidential Advocates. At UP I balance roles in survivor support, wellness education, counseling, and research. My mission is to engage everyone in making our campus a safe and welcoming place to live, learn and work together. Outside of UP you might find me baking, as I try out old family recipes and experiment with new ones. You could also find me rock climbing or hiking. I also might be researching and writing about psychology and popular culture. Most likely, you’ll see me out walking my dog.
